Ethernet overview

Ethernet started every bit a shared media protocol where all hosts communicated over a single 10Mbps wire or channel. Frame overhead

High-bandwidth Ethernet switch fabrics are at present the leading networking solution used to interconnect servers and storage inside large data center networks. In the standard IEEE 802.3 Ethernet specification, the minimum frame size was 64  bytes and the maximum was 1518   bytes (since expanded to 1522   bytes). The preamble consists of 7   bytes followed by a single byte as a first frame delineator. The frame itself has a header containing the destination and source encoded in 48-bit addresses known as media access control (MAC) addresses. The frame data follows this header and is terminated by the frame cheque sequence. On Gigabit Ethernet networks jumbo frames of up to 8960   bytes can be used which bypass the standard Ethernet maximum of 1522   bytes.

The state of the fine art for Ethernet is currently 100   Gbps. In the June 2017 Top 500 list of supercomputers, Gigabit Ethernet is featured in 207 systems and is the almost common internal system interconnect technology in the list [9]. six.vii.1.2 InfiniBand

IB is an alternative to Ethernet for computer networking technology and originated in 1999. Unlike Ethernet, IB does not need to run networking protocols on the CPU; these are handled directly on the IB adapters. In this way, the waveform generator re-shapes the output waveform transmitted onto the twisted pair cable to encounter the pulse template requirements required by the FCC and outlined in IEEE 802.3. The waveform generator eliminates the need for whatever external filters on the transmit output. Figure 5-4 shows a typical combined 10Baset/100Basetx transmitter section.

ii.6.two Access Protocol

We now turn our attention to the algorithm that controls admission to a shared Ethernet link. This algorithm is normally called the Ethernet's media access control (MAC). Frame Format

Addresses

Each host on an Ethernet—in fact, every Ethernet host in the world—has a unique Ethernet address. Transmitter Algorithm
